Nice upgrade

I bought a CUTECH 40700 planer with straight knives in 2021 and was ready to upgrade to a spiral/helical head planer. I tried this as a reasonable cost alternative to a total replacement, and I'm happy with it. The cutting quality is much higher than straight knives. The install process was not difficult if you've worked on machines a bit before (not my favorite activity, but mandatory to make your peace with if you're going to use machines for woodwork) -- the only bit I struggled with was getting the E-clips off, and I don't have the right tool for that.

My only knock for this kit is that there were no instructions provided at all. Nothing written, no links emailed, nothing to download on this listing page. I looked around and found a good video CUTECH posted on youtube that got me through the process, despite a few differences on my planer model (search for "40800H Cutterhead Replacement").

Delta Planer

The original planer knives on my 12.5 inch Delta planer were extremely dull. A friend recommended that I needed to contact Cutech. A company representative helped me out with getting the correct model. Ordering and shipping went flawlessly so that I had my cutter head in a week. As I awaited my shipment to arrive, I glued up some pine 1x6’s for test boards. Installing the cutter head took me a few hours as I also did some parts cleaning and lubricating when I reassembled the machine. In the first 15 minutes of operation I created 10 gallons of wood chips planing the pine to make sure the machine was accurate. I had a hickory 2x6 that was 3 foot long the new carbide cutters went right through it as well. You won’t regret these carbide inserts. Go ahead and buy it!
